History of the Evert Willem Beth Papers

Beth kept a part of his papers in his office at the university, but the majority he retained at home. In 1973 Mrs. Beth-Pastoor deposited her husband's extensive personal archive with the 'Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen'.
In 1983 the 'Vakgroep Logica' of the University of Amsterdam transferred the documents originally kept by Beth at the 'Instituut voor Grondslagenonderzoek' to the 'Akademie'. The supplement from the 'Vakgroep' also contained a number of typescripts of publications by fellow logicians and mathematicians collected by Beth. * In addition were included a number of files and documents, dating from after Beth's death, relating to the teaching and supervision of students * and to the management of the 'Instituut voor Grondslagenonderzoek', * and a number of files concerning the publication of Beth's last books. *
While at the 'Akademie' a number of documents which had strayed from the papers were returned. The following additions were made.
From the A. Heyting Papers came correspondence between Beth and H. Leblanc and Leblanc's Note on a set of Gentzen rules for propositional calculus; * sales reports for The foundations of mathematics; * and a copy of a manuscript of Semantic construction of intuitionistic logic. *
From P.G.E. Wesly came a manuscript of Natuur en geest. * In 1994 Ms A.A.M. Beth added three notebooks. *
A small number of documents belonging to the Beth Papers have strayed to Beth's library. They are two books with notes in Beth's handwriting and seven volumes of bound copies of Beth's articles. Since Beth's library was given to the University of Amsterdam as one collection belonging together under the name of 'Bibliotheca E.W. Beth', these strays could not be physically returned to the Beth Papers. In consultation with the custodian of the 'Bibliotheca' these documents have been included in the inventory however. *
A number of documents were added to the Beth Papers from other sources. From S. Kooi came the letters sent to him by Beth. * From E.M. Barth and J.J.A. Mooij came, via the 'Vakgroep Logica', the documents already mentioned on p. 17 and relating to the publishing of three of Beth's books. *
In 1993 the Beth Papers were transferred from the 'Akademie' to the 'Rijksarchief in Noord-Holland' in Haarlem, fitting in with the plans to transfer archives at the 'Akademie' to public depositories.
