The oldest documents in the Beth Papers date from the 1920's and early 1930's and concern Beth's pre-academic and academic career. Few documents remain from this early period and most seem to have been preserved by accident, the exceptions being the syllabi of H.A. Kramers's lectures (1929-1933), * the correspondence with P.G.J. Vredenduin (from 1933 on) * and J. Wolff (from 1931 on) * and the documents relating to his membership of the 'Genootschap voor Kritische Wijsbegeerte' (from 1933 on). * From 1935 on, when Beth obtained his doctor's degree, started publishing and began to move in national and international philosophical circles, the range of subjects widens. After 1946, when Beth was appointed professor at the University of Amsterdam, became deeply involved in a great many national and international organizing activities and took on numerous official functions, the Beth Papers reach their full extent in subject matter.
The Evert Willem Beth Papers illuminate first of all Beth's development as a scholar in the various studies to which he applied himself, including mathematical logic, the philosophy of science, mathematics and their teaching, and philosophy in general.
Secondly, his functioning as teacher and research supervisor at the University of Amsterdam is well documented.
Thirdly, there is much to be found concerning his important role in promoting the standing of philosophy of science and mathematical logic both nationally and internationally.
And lastly, through the Beth Papers it is possible to learn much about philosophical life in general in the Netherlands in this century.
On the contrary, there is very little material in the Beth Papers that documents his personal life, although the abundance of drafts and carbon copies of Beth's letters does allow to gain some insight into his personality.
